Mind the paywall…
After much deliberation, I’ve decided to put this post behind the paywall, for my inner circle only, as it’s more personal than my usual pieces.
I’m still getting used to how much of myself I should put out here, having spent my entire professional life hiding behind brands. The ‘real me’ abandoned social media a while back, but it feels different over here on SubStack and a safe place, hopefully it will stay that way.
I feel especially guilty about paywalling this for my new subscribers, of which there have been quite a few this week, which I’m very grateful for! So I have temporarily taken the paywall off all the archived posts, so you can fill your boots here in the meantime:
The overwhelming majority of my posts are free at the moment, and so hopefully you’ll hang around long enough to enjoy some more! The next freebie should be along on Sunday, see you then!

I settled into the optician’s chair, whilst answering a few rudimental ID questions, thinking it was for security purposes, and then…

I thought: Say what? Why? Are we not past this point? This was my second visit to this opticians.
I have always hated that question. What do you do for a living? Not because my previous jobs have been embarrassing or illegal, it’s just that they’ve all been things that have ALWAYS prompted the follow-up question…
