A wonderful read! And thank you for posting the photo of Babycham. Until today the only thing I knew of it was a line from a tv show or movie (likely from the 80’s) where someone asked whether Babycham was made of real babies. I like the reindeer better.
I too thought of the Babychamp little reindeer when I first heard the name Baby Reindeer! I also stopped half-way through Harry Potter No.4 mainly because it was too think and I had uni work to focus on rather than it was scary... also, the writing was a bit complicated so J.K. lost me at that point. I first heard of Baby Reindeer on a news segment where the stalker, who admitted to being the one, was interviewed and told the interview how she felt about it all. I haven't got round to watching this as I am interested in a couple of series on Disney+ first. Great read though, Kate! :)
Excellent breakdown not just of "Baby Reindeer" the show but of how and why the phenomenon it came to be was received by viewers and by the rest on the onlooking, rather astounded, world. It's a series that will continue to matter. My review is here: https://moviestruck.substack.com/p/tv-baby-reindeer-2024
I loved the background on this. I binged the series last night - the authenticity is palpable! I imagine it was really difficult for Gadd to re-enact the more traumatic scenes. Amazing work all round.
Great write up! I appreciate the back story. I loved the show so so much, I think mainly because Richard Gadd lets his faults and missteps shine through. His character is so vulnerable, and he’s also so annoying at times (the mistakes he makes!) and the combination makes him so relatable. That and the way he lets us watch as he examines his own reactions to these events. Amazing.
I know, it's a strange subject matter to be 'loving', but it was dealt with in such a sympathetic way, it managed to hook us all in for the duration. 👏
My wife and I gulped back Baby Reindeer in two nights last week. It's mental OMG quicksand! Not that it's something to brag about but I have had crossovers with stalkers (female). Three actually. I'm not sure what that says about me! One was actually a comedian who egged me on to "friend" her best friend from Nicaragua on Facebook. She regaled me with stories about this bestie of hers and insisted I would love her. This friend ended up being HER all along. The friend asked constant questions about our relationship and how it was going and...insert shivers here. It was months later when it was all revealed. Baby Reindeer pranced me right back to those 'two'. Quick, pass the Babycham, stat! (Never heard of that but so fun!).
We are total TV Siamese twins now. I might lose you on the Orlando Bloom: To the Edge or Nat Geo's Photographer series but they were part of my serious travel/fantasy life programming this week. American Rust with Maura Tierney and Jeff Daniels was a good slow simmer too.
Now I'm wondering if this is really you replying or your best friend...
In further TV matchy-matchness---do we align on Bloodline, Apples May Fall, Animal Kingdom, 30 Degrees in February, Broadchurch, Daisy Jones & The Six and Sons of Anarchy as well?
Great write up thanks Kate, I’ve seen this advertised on TV or it was on Gogglebox (can never remember) & it looked great but I forgot the name! But people and their witch hunts man, when did everyone become vigilantes? There’s too many cop shops on telly I reckon!!
Couldn’t agree more about the unexpected success Kate! AND the naming of it. Fun fact: when it first came out I recommended it to a friend as “Small Mammals” as I couldn’t quite recall what they whooderio it was called.
I wasn’t interested in this show… until now. Will have to give to a go. And I most definitely don’t call it X. I’m set in my ways so Twitter it will always be!
Kate - wonderful write up (as always). Entertaining with enough back story to make you want to watch. I just may have to give this show another go. I got through the first episode. Haven’t yet gone back.

I heard about this show, but haven't watched it. Recently saw the headlines that his stalker is considering legal action because of the show: https://www.msn.com/en-us/entertainment/news/real-life-baby-reindeer-stalker-speaks-out-is-considering-legal-action-after-netflix-show-i-m-the-victim/ar-AA1nMm4v?ocid=BingNewsSerp
And if you watch the show, you’ll know why. 😉

I've been wondering if it was more difficult for him to act out the trauma scenes, or the horrifically unfunny comedy. 😂

You've just convinced me to start watching it this weekend!
Excellent! I hope you enjoy it! 😘
I loved Baby Reindeer! Not something I’d usually be drawn to.
Exactly! 👏
I loved it! If you can love something so dark and unsettling in so many ways. It was excellent - and different. Great review!
Thanks Patricia! 😘

Omg, that is so scary that they turned out be one person! But actually it was a genius idea to get info from you! 😂
Thank you for the recommendations, I will give them a watch, given our tastes align so well! 👏👏 😘

Of those I have only seen Broadchurch… loved Season 1, but found Season 2 to drag quite considerably. Will explore the others, thank you! 👍😘
Twitter forever. Haha! I wasn’t sure about Baby Reindeer but will give it a go.

Great piece!
That’s hilarious! I’m sure it will be a big hit in charade games of Christmas Future too! 😘

Well said Sandra!
Don’t forget to have Seinfeld standing by if things get too dark. 😉😘

Give it another go! 👏👏😘
Diving back in now. Only for you Kate…
You may even get a post out of it! 😉
