Apologies if all this talk of chocolate has made you go foraging around in the fridge for that last piece of Easter egg. 🍫

Unfortunately I never read the book, but I would have felt the same as you about Wilder’s hair color if I had. Depp gave me the same feeling as you in the role of Wonka, very creepy character around the kids. Still can’t watch that one more than once. I so appreciate your work on the math! I knew something felt off about all of it. Good point on his mother’s note to an illiterate son! What a thoughtfully researched post. 👏

Gene Wilder has always spooked me in the way Christopher Walken does most. I loved the book and Roald Dahl's autobiography Boy and Going Solo even more. As a kid I had a greater appreciation for aerosol whipped cream and sponge toffee (not together). So, owning a factory that spewed either of those would have been the true dream.

I am the only person who has travelled to Switzerland and not had a speck of chocolate. Not even a lick of Lindt. Thanks for the fun comp though (I too loved the pumpkin math). Johnny Depp can do no wrong in my mind. Well, except for that one time.

Hee hee!

I would love to see Christopher Walken play Wonka, now that would be very disturbing! 😂😂

You actually figured out the math! Haha.

I loved the performances too except the little girl but it’s tough to find a genius child actor.

Yeah, I thought it an odd “glass chard” that Wonka couldn’t read. It would have been funnier if he was allergic to chocolate. And more room for a curious back story.

Agreed. The illiteracy angle was ridiculous.

We know that Wonka’s mother was present during his childhood, and she was literate, hence the note in the chocolate bar at the end.

Why would your last message to your son be a written note (rather than a picture) if you thought he couldn’t read? She would have taught him. 😬

So true. Sometimes when the writer is also the director these character problems fall through the cracks.

I love this review. I think dull in terms of a film plot is the worst insult you can throw at them. Particularly when it comes to Willy Wonka. I thought I went down rabbit 🐇 warrens to do my research but the cost of a Tesco large pumpkin beats me hands down. A definite chuckle review thanks Kate 😘😘

Particularly as pumpkins are out of season right now too! 😉

I cackled reading this - you made maths so funny and so entertaining. Great deductioning - pun almost intended. Also you’re totally right about the film being strangely dull, my partner and I watched it on a plane and I kept waiting for a song that was good or a something to give it real energy but was disappointed. Some great characters and actors - and now if I ever see it again I’ll be kept awake paying attention to the sovereigns! Also the point about the coin Charlie finds is such a lovely bit of detail!

Thank you so much for your comments, I’m glad you’re in agreement, you never know if anyone has the same view… until you hit ‘publish’. 😘

I found so many lovely nuggets in the research, I think I enjoyed that, more than the film. 😉

Haha I can see why - this post is full of such fun!

Your math made my head work too hard. I appreciate it though. If Hugh Grant can’t save “Wonka” then God save the queen (or king) (or princess) / Someone needs to be saved?

Did you wish you owned a chocolate factory when you were a kid? I don't think so. I'm a sweets person, not so much a "chocolate" person. So, if anything, I probably would've loved a candy shop or a bakery or something.

Did you enjoy Wonka the movie? Out of all the versions, I liked the Gene Wilder one best. I have no idea what "praedo" means, but Johnny Depp's version was a little creepy. Although I laughed every time he said, "MUMBLER!" I liked the origin story, and his magical chocolate suitcase setup, I would have to agree with you. I don't remember laughing when I watched this movie. I thought Timothee was great, though.

Do you agree that Season 4: Episode 6 of Peep Show ‘Wedding’ is still the best sitcom episode ever? Never seen this show. LOL
